Nebraska Dental Hygienists' Association added an event.
Dear Nebraska Dental Hygienists,
I would like to invite you to attend the annual Legislative Breakfast that is scheduled for February 15, 2018. The legislative breakfast with Senators will be in Room 1126 on the first floor the Nebraska State Capitol. It is a fun time and so beneficial to dental hygiene! Members of the Legislature attend these breakfast events – and there are many of them throughout the legislative session – pretty much for one reason, that being to meet and visit with anyone who may be attending from their Legislative District. That’s why it is so very important for us to have a great attendance at our breakfast from dental hygienists across Nebraska. So, please make every effort to be with us on February 15th.
It is often asked, “What do I talk to a State Senator about?” and that is a good question. The central purpose of our breakfast is to provide an opportunity for our members to meet and become better acquainted with their representative in the Legislature. Here are some questions, which can serve as a conversational gambit just to get a discussion rolling:
• How long have you been in the Legislature? • Are you enjoying it? • Is it (for newcomers) or has it fulfilled your expectations? • What legislation are you sponsoring this year? • What committees do you serve on? • What do you think will be the major issues of the session?
Now, you have probably noted that these get-acquainted questions don’t really have anything to do with dental hygiene. What about that? Well, here is a rule: If the senator asks, “Does the NDHA have any issues this session?” the cat’s been let out of the bag, and its fair game to chase it. But if they don’t ask, it’s fair to assume that they do not wish to be lobbied at what is primarily a social event, as many of them do not, and that is fine. What you want to do then is ask if you can come to their office today or send a note to them on the floor and discuss a couple of issues with them.
